www.maltaoperhouse.com/previously is preserved as a permanent reminder of the battle to restore THEATRE, not parliament to this historic and much loved site in Valletta. The editorial and features remain unchanged. This website a grateful to the many people in Malta and beyond who publicly and privately contributed to this work. Thanks especially to the thousands who believe passionately in Maltese theatre and performing arts who share the vision that theatre will return.

The Royal Opera House was a performing arts establishment near the entrance to Valletta, Malta's capital city.

More than 65 years after the destruction by enemy action the derelict bomb site of the Opera House remains just that, a bomb site.

The Malta government is planning to relocate their Parliament to the bombed out site of the old Opera House at the entrance to Malta's historic capital city, Valletta.

Dr Lawrence Gonzi, Malta's Prime Minister has said Parliament will be removed from the President's Palace where it will be replaced by a number of museums.

The idea to have Parliament transferred to a rebuilt Opera House has sparked massive controversy in Malta and well beyond these Mediterranean islands.

Dr. Gonzi has said the government has decided not to rebuild the Opera House as a theatre because it did not want to "saturate" the area with theatre.

Thousands of Maltese and a great many non-Maltese in Malta, across Europe and beyond disagree strongly with Dr. Gonzi.

"This is not about politics - this is an issue in relation to the preservation and development of the Arts, Theatre and Culture for the Maltese and the many who visit, adore and enjoy these Mediterranean islands."

Today there is a storm in Malta over the future of this prominent bomb site. Thousands of Maltese are angry and alarmed that, after all these years, the Prime Minister seems hell-bent on turning this into a place for Parliament.

Who will win this row? The people or the Prime Minister of these Mediterranean islands? As Europe looks on this website puts the case against the complete decimation of this site for politics in favour of redeveloping it for theatre, the arts and Maltese culture.

We have published an open letter to Malta's Prime Minister regarding the issue of the Opera House bomb site in Valletta. So far the silence has been deafening.
